Honestly, no. India has had a few homegrown search engines over the years, but none became popular the way Google is. I’ve worked on SEO for Indian and Gulf-based clients for a while, and when I look at their analytics, nearly all organic traffic comes from Google. Bing is a small slice, and I’ve never seen an Indian-built engine show up as a referral source in any of those reports. StatCounter’s India figures for September 2026 tell the same story, with the top engine at around 96% and Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo in the low single digits or below.

It’s not that nobody tried. Guruji.com was probably the best-known early attempt in the mid-2000s, focused on Indian content and local-language searches, but it faded and was shut down. Raftaar came later with a similar idea and never gained real traction. Webdunia is still known for regional-language content, and Epic Browser, a privacy-focused browser from Bangalore, had its own search layer, but both stayed niche.
The main reasons are scale and habit. Google has spent over twenty years building its index, and Android phones in India ship with Google as the default, so most people never think about switching. The one gap Indian engines targeted was local-language search, but Google and Bing have improved their Hindi and regional results a lot, which closed that opening.

From a practical point of view, when a client asks me whether they should optimize for an Indian search engine, my answer is always the same: put your effort into Google first, then Bing if you have time. Indian-made engines exist or have existed, but none became popular across the country.
